Membrane biophysics: The dynamics of growing axons
نویسنده
چکیده
We know an enormous amount about the chemistry of a living cell, but next to nothing about its physics — the interplay of forces between organelles and molecules that governs the cell’s detailed behaviour. Think of the plasma membrane, for example: an oily sea of phospholipid molecules studded with protein ‘icebergs’ of different shapes and sizes, some floating free and others anchored at their base. How does this molecular goulash behave when the cell moves or changes its shape? If a lipid tide flows in one direction, will this carry with it the protein icebergs? What forces must be overcome if the sea has to increase in area or deform its contours? Questions such as these are still beyond our reach, but a raft of novel techniques using the light microscope brings at least the promise of quantitative answers.

Effects of Biodegradable Polymers on the Rat's Damaged Spinal Cord Neural Membranes
The overall goal of this study was to identify the appropriate biomaterials able to facilitate the regeneration in rat's injured adult spinal cord. Acute damage to axons is manifested as a breach in their membranes, ionexchange distortion across the compromised region, local depolarization and even conduction block. It would be of particular importance to interrupt the progress of events h...
متن کاملCompound Action Potential of Isolated Spinal Cord: A Biophysical Analysis to Address Activity of Individual Fibers Following Contusion Injury
Compound action potential (CAP) of spinal cord represents valuable properties of neural fibers including excitability, rate of myelination and membrane integrity. These properties are measured using amplitude, latency and area under curve of CAPs recorded from spinal cord. Here, the isolated spinal cord was set in a double sucrose gap (DSG) chamber and its response to intracellular stimulation ...
متن کاملEffect of Cyclosporin-A on the Order and Dynamics of DPPC model Membrane Systems
Laser Raman spectroscopy has been employed to investigate the effects of cyclosporine-A on the order and dynamics of DPPC (Dipalmytoyl Phosphatidyl Choline) midel membrane system. It is shown that the addition of small amount of cyclosporine-A to a DPPC dispersion disturb the system and changes the order/disorder parameter of the model membrane.
متن کاملComponents of the plasma membrane of growing axons. I. Size and distribution of intramembrane particles
The plasmalemma of mature and growing olfactory axons of the bullfrog has been studied by freeze-fracture. Intramembrane particles (IMPs) of mature olfactory axons are found to be uniformly distributed along the shaft. However, during growth, a decreasing gradient of IMP density is evident along the somatofugal axis. The size histograms of axolemmal IMPs from different segments of growing nerve...
متن کاملThree Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis of a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell
A full three-dimensional, single phase computational fluid dynamics model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with both the gas distribution flow channels and the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) has been developed. A single set of conservation equations which are valid for the flow channels, gas-diffusion electrodes, catalyst layers, and the membrane region are developed and numer...
